How size and fit settings work

The browser decodes the source, calculates output dimensions from the selected fit rule, resamples the pixels, and encodes a new image.

Resizing limits

  • Enlarging a small source cannot create missing detail.
  • Cover can crop edges; contain keeps the full image within the target bounds.
  • Very large decoded images can exceed browser memory limits.

When to resize an image

  • Create consistent website thumbnails.
  • Fit photos to avatar or social dimensions.
  • Reduce pixel dimensions before another conversion.

Image resizing questions

Does resizing change the aspect ratio?

Contain, cover, inside, and outside use the source ratio. Fill can change the ratio when both dimensions are forced.
