How WebP encoding changes a JPG

The JPEG is decoded and re-encoded as WebP in the browser. Quality controls the new WebP encode, not the quality already lost in the source.

JPG-to-WebP tradeoffs

  • Conversion is not guaranteed to make every image smaller.
  • A lossy source cannot regain detail during conversion.
  • Some older software does not support WebP.

When WebP is the better fit

  • Create lighter variants for a website.
  • Prepare modern CMS image assets.
  • Batch convert JPEG marketing files.
