How it works

FileFruit loads the AVIF encoder only for this task, decodes each JPEG, and encodes a new AVIF file in the browser.

Important limitations

  • AVIF encoding can be slower and more memory intensive than WebP or JPG.
  • Conversion cannot restore detail already lost in JPEG.
  • Some older software cannot open AVIF.

Why can AVIF conversion take longer?

AVIF encoding is computationally heavier and depends on the device and source dimensions.
